Hijack joke has prison punchline

A Briton has been jailed for three months in Queensland after drunkenly boasting that he would hijack a plane in the Barrier Reef town of Cairns.
Thomas Lilico, 22, of Darlington, Co Durham, was at the tail end of a New Year's celebration when he boarded a Qantas flight to Darwin late on Wednesday night, having drunk eight pints of beer over the previous six hours.
While the plane was still on the ground, he pulled an asthma inhaler from his luggage and started to spray it around the cabin.
Cairns magistrate Ken Lynn was told that moments later, a stewardess heard him mumble: "I'm going to pull my knife out and hijack the plane."
She said that he did not appear to have directed the comment at anyone. In any case, the court heard, he was thwarted by the fact that his knife was packed in the cargo hold. But police took him off the flight, along with five companions.
The federal prosecutor said a fine would be sufficient for the crime, but Mr Lynn said that in the current world climate such conduct should be treated more seriously.
Lilico, who was on a working holiday in Australia, burst into tears as he was told the sentence.
