France on Monday publicly acknowledged management rifts inside EADS and appealed for calm at the Franco-German aerospace group.

The comments by recently appointed finance minister Herve Gaymard lifted the veil on EADS' management disputes ahead of a crucial week for the company, whose problems include tensions between French and German shareholders, in-fighting between French managers and a spat with Boeing over subsidies.

"There is a management problem involving people and I hope that as soon as possible we will solve this situation, which is not good for the company," Gaymard told LCI television.

The French co-head of EADS, Philippe Camus, and Airbus chief Noel Forgeard, have been locked in a barely concealed but never officially recognized struggle for power in recent months.

Industry sources said last week German shareholder DaimlerChrysler had vetoed a bid by French President Jacques Chirac to put Forgeard in sole charge of EADS, replacing a power-sharing system between French and German co-CEOs.

Gaymard said the Franco-German balance inside partly state-owned EADS was one of the issues surrounding the group, but said both governments were trying to cool down the debate.

"I met (German Economy Minister) Wolfgang Clement last week in Berlin and we agreed to inject some calm into this dossier so that all the partners recognize themselves in this superb industrial project," he said.

SUCCESSION DEBATE

Far from putting the issue on hold, however, Camus's German counterpart Rainer Hertrich made an early announcement on Saturday of his plans to retire next June, a move seen as forcing the pace on the succession debate at EADS.

Sources said DaimlerChrysler nominated current EADS head of defence business Thomas Enders to succeed Hertrich.

French shareholders in EADS -- the government and media firm Lagardere -- are due to hold a meeting on Wednesday at which they are expected to discuss the EADS structure. Reports say Arnaud Lagardere, son of the firm's late founder, may face pressure to back either Camus or Forgeard as the top Frenchman.

Forgeard has made plain he is interested in Camus's job but hinted strongly that he only wants it if he can run the company alone.

Camus said last week that EADS was expected to stick with its Franco-German leadership structure with two co-CEOs.

The board of EADS will meet on Friday to weigh up a postponed decision on whether to launch a multi-billion dollar aircraft to rival Boeing's 7E7 Dreamliner in the lucrative mid-sized jet market.

Forgeard had expressed optimism that the board would back the A350 project at the end of November but was kept waiting in what some company observers saw, despite denials, as a snub to the Airbus chief from his French boss Camus.

Airbus has said it will apply for European government loans for the project, something which is likely to irk rival Boeing as the United States and Europe seek to defuse allegations on both sides about illegal plane subsidies.

Europe's trade chief Peter Mandelson meets his US counterpart Robert Zoellick for the first time on Monday amid signs of a temporary truce in the row.
