Russia's government wants a majority stake in any new terminal built at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport -- a pet project of flag carrier Aeroflot -- Transport Minister Igor Levitin said on Friday.
State-owned Sheremetyevo approved a USD$70 million plan in October to start rebuilding its existing facilities next year, ending months of heated debate in the government over who should turn it into a major hub between Asia and Europe and how.
Aeroflot later announced its own plan to build a new terminal, which would be the third to be constructed at the airport. Some government officials said they believed the new terminal was unnecessary.
But Levitin, who had been doubtful about Aeroflot's plan, said on Friday the government was now in favor of the venture but wanted to make sure the state had a controlling stake.
"Aeroflot can build the terminal, but 51 percent should belong to the government," Levitin, who is also chairman of Sheremetyevo, said.
Aeroflot is anxious to upgrade the airport before it joins the global Air France-led SkyTeam alliance, which it plans to do in late 2005.
Reconstruction of Sheremetyevo is also key to Aeroflot's plans to turn itself into a competitive global player ahead of the possible sale of the state's 51 percent stake in Russia's biggest airline.
