Mojave Airport was established as a county facility in 1935 suitable for general aviation with taxiways and minor support facilities.
In 1942, the airport was taken over by the Federal Government and reconstructed as the Mojave Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station.
In July 1961, Kern County obtained title to the property and operated the facility as part of the county system of general aviation airports and site for promotion of industry. The East Kern Airport District was formed in February 1972 for the purpose of acquiring and operating the Mojave Airport, managed by Dan Sabovich. Today, the Mojave Airport serves as a home for companies involved in modification and flight test of major military jet and civilian aircraft, aircraft storage, and other high-tech industries.
Mojave Airport is a world renowned civilian flight test center and is home to some of the most unique and exotic aircraft ever built such as the Voyager, Proteus and Derringer.
